My personal favorite is the 991 GT3. The look good, have a nice gray finish, center lock hubs, and are backed up by beefy carbon ceramics. They just look awesome. What’s your favorite automotive wheel design?

I love the wheels on the Viper TA
And the Style 359M from BMW
![]() 08/16/2015 at 10:55 |

The Viper, in all trims, has some of the best wheel designs out there.

I like a wheel that’s no bigger than necessary, and emphasizes the tire. That said, 6ULs look good on anything .

Mmmmmmmm.

Its kinda plain but still looks cool.

Wheels of that type of style are pretty common but look great nonetheless.

I love the new Miata’s wheels.

Always a favorite.

I liked the 106 rallye’s wheels so much I copied them (then let them get coated in brake dust).
Plus bonus £80 Micra that refuses to leave under it's own power.

I shouldn't like those as much as I do...

I don’t really like the 5-spoke design. Looks so plain and out of place in this kind of car.
![]() 08/16/2015 at 11:15 |

They just fit the style of a little hatch so well, cheap but still cool.

I’m a big fan of the Gallardo LP560-4 wheels

I normally don’t like five spokes either, but those aren’t too bad compared to these:
![]() 08/16/2015 at 11:24 |

They look nice, but they're a little too busy for my taste.
![]() 08/16/2015 at 11:31 |

But I’d be paying someone to clean them because F that.

I love the C6 Vette’s wheels. Simple and understated but gorgeous. Astra VXR wheels are always a good choice.

This is a hard question because wheels make or break overall design for me. If limit it to stock wheel design (not color), right now it’s the M4 GTS concept. If I tried to think about aftermarket and color too my head would asplode.

Alpina wheels are awesome. Especially with that purple paint.
![]() 08/16/2015 at 11:45 |

Wheels make or break the design for me as well, which is why I would legimately pay a few thousand extra just for wheels that look good. I normally dislike aftermarket wheels (I like cars stock), but there are some admittedly nice ones out there.

Came here to say GS
![]() 08/16/2015 at 12:03 |

There’s a variation of the wheel that isn’t chrome, it’s great.
The C6 GS just might be my favorite car. I think it's the perfect incarnation of the Corvette. It looks fantastic, it's got all the Z51 suspension goodies, and has an LS3 with dual mode exhaust. It's not the insane Z06 or batshit crazy ZR1, but it's better all around because of it

Yep, I really like this post. It should be required reading for manufacturers, great taste in the post and comments here. Though, I could see that spawning something hideous like German or Italian looking wheels on the 2020 Tahoe or something nightmarish like that. The wheel must work with the car, and vice versa.

Yeah can we do this post for worst wheels? Way easier!

Chevy’s SUV/truck rims do actually like quite good. All F-type wheels are awesome.

Agreed.

You mean this one?
I agree, IMO, the GS is the best looking of the C6s. Plus the manuals get the dry sump, hand built Wixom LS3!

I think they really nailed the entire design of their new SUV lineup!
Jag always has great wheels.

I am loving these - I am seriously considering buying a used Abarth 500, and these wheels look great on it

All STI gold wheels are certifiably awesome.

The wheels on the launch edition C63 look fantastic
![]() 08/16/2015 at 13:34 |

They look good, and you can get them on any C63. Not sure I like the red though.

BMW Style 323 from the X1. Saw them on a F30, they look great. Wonder if they’re easy to fit on?
![]() 08/16/2015 at 13:45 |

I think the red looks good on either the black or white Edition 1 cars. It fits the theme with the red accents and red calipers. Mercedes seems to have a thing for red accents on special edition cars. They put a similar wheel on the CLA45 which also looks pretty sharp.
![]() 08/16/2015 at 14:05 |

I like that look a lot too, and I am very picky on the center portion of the wheel - I hate center caps. I love the look of the Abarth wheel above, with nuts visible
![]() 08/16/2015 at 14:05 |

These look so much better - I hate center caps.

Didn’t we have this question elsewhere this week? Ah well.
I love simple, symmetrical, 5-spoke wheels, and some split-5-spoke.
McLaren road cars.
Ferrari 360.
Volvo’s R cars and R-Design.
Ford GT:
Ford Mustang:
There’s a few 6-spoke wheels I like, but only if there are 6 lugs to match (like Ford’s F-150 wheels).
![]() 08/16/2015 at 15:34 |
|
My Fuchs. Because color match.
I’m also becoming quite fond of the wheels on my V-sport. I was kind of lukewarm at first, but they’ve really grown on me.

Is it weird that I immediately recognized this as being from the Porsche museum? I’m not even sure if it was the car, the building or the layout of the info plaque...

Just... All of the factors
![]() 08/16/2015 at 23:05 |

The Volk & Gram Lights. Well mostly the lightweight functional rims are my favorites. Nothing over 20” because even 20” is pushing it right at the “gaudy” line.

I can either love or hate five spokes, but you listed some of the better examples out there. I also like six spoke wheels on trucks, for some reason they look “tough.”

Nothing at all wrong with those.
![]() 08/17/2015 at 09:18 |
|
Yep.
One of my biggest pet peeves with wheel design is when the number of spokes doesn’t match (or is a multiple of) the number of lugs. I loved that the NC Miata used five lug wheels, but they back-stepped on the ND to 4 again, which looks awkward, square (not round), and, to me, cheap, as nowadays only economy cars, lawn equipment, and golf carts continue with four-lug wheels. Three-lug setups are acceptable as the manufacturer is clearly doing all they can to conserve costs, and the triangular shape is more wheel-like to me than the four-lug square. Though in my ideal automotive world, wheels would have no less than 5, excepting one-lug centric-bolt wheels like exotic cars (P1, 918, Carrera GT).
To add to the list, the Carrera GT, F-150 Lightning (5 lug 5 spoke), and RX-8 are also up there. I was running out of battery when I made my initial reply.
![]() 08/17/2015 at 09:22 |

I can say from experience they’re a PITA to clean, unless one likes using pipe cleaners.

McMerc SLR turbine wheels are probably my favorite stock wheels.
It also has the best exhaust note on a production car IMO.
![]() 08/17/2015 at 12:59 |

I was pretty shocked that nobody had nominated them yet. Usually they’re the first reply in a ‘whats your favorite wheel’ post.
![]() 08/17/2015 at 15:52 |

Both the wheels are and exhaust note are fantastic, but I wouldn't go as far as to say they're best ever.
